Forest kingfisher
The forest kingfisher lives near water in wet and monsoon forests, woodlands and on the edge of mangroves – wherever there is fish. Kingfishers are masters at the art of catching fish, as their name suggests. However, they eat lots of other things too, including dragonflies, bugs, butterflies, frogs, tadpoles and snakes.
Forest kingfishers burrow into arboreal termite nests where they hollow out a chamber high off the ground. Here, a pair will lay their eggs and incubate them, sometimes with the help of other kingfishers. The fledglings stay in the nest for around two months after hatching, before making their own way in the world.
My inspiration for this design came from an encounter with a forest kingfisher at Goose Lagoon, within the Territory Wildlife Park. I was walking with my mother and we both had our cameras at the ready. I spied the kingfisher, raised my camera, and he took off. I said, aloud to the bird, ‘Oh why did you do that? It would have been a great shot!’. The bird promptly landed again and posed while I took three or four shots. I lowered my camera; it looked at me and flew away. I found the unlikely serendipity of this moment so delightful that I sat down with the photos I had taken as soon as I had a chance and created this design.

About our cushion covers
- This listing is for the cushion cover, not the whole cushion. They work best for 45-50cm cushion inserts, depending on how plump you like your cushions.
- Our cushion fabrics are designed by Boo at Susurrus Studio in Darwin River and printed in Australia. Boo uses a variety of techniques to design the fabrics including painting, drawing, lino prints and digital photography and drawing.
- Boo makes all the cushions in her studio and is registered with the Australian Made campaign.
- Cushions listed on this page are made from polyester upholstery fabric, making them super durable in most environments and very easy to wash.
- They come in a range of great designs with vibrant colours to match any decor.
- All cushions are double-sided. Some cushions have a variation of print (usually scale) on the other side - unless two different images are shown in the display above, both sides of the cushion will be identical.

Handmade with love
Every fabric used in our cushion covers is designed by Boo at Susurrus Studio in Darwin River, located an hour south of Darwin in the hot tropics of Australia. Boo draws much of her inspiration from her bush environment, especially the birds and flora of the Top End and across Australia.
The fabrics are printed with care in Sydney. When they arrive, Boo steps away from the design table and leans into the sewing machine to hand craft each item.
