Orange-footed scrub fowl
Keen gardeners in the Top End tend not be a fan of this bird who is an enthusiastic composter with no regard for anyone’s landscaping efforts. The males build huge mounds and the female birds choose a mate depending on how impressed they are with his efforts. Gardeners are usually less than impressed when they find their beds dug up and turned into hillocks.
The mound serves the purpose of absolving either parent of any further responsibility. The eggs are laid deep in the mound where the warmth of the composting organic matter incubates them until they hatch and dig their way out as independent little garden wreckers.
The top of this clutch frame measures 23.5cm across. The height of the clutch (not including the closure) is approximately 16cm. The base measures approximately 31.5cm x 10cm. It has an internal patch pocket and a solid base. The final image in the carousel shows the fabric used for the clutch lining.
