Goanna
The goanna is the name given to large lizards of the Varanus genus found across Australia and South-east Asia. Twenty-five of the 70-odd species of Varanus are found in Australia. The name derives from iguana. Early European settlers likened them to the South American lizard of that name and over time it was shortened and became goanna.
Most goannas lay eggs in a nest or burrow, but some species lay their eggs in termite mounds, where the freshly hatched lizards can find a tasty meal before setting off into the big wide world.
